History of Sport in America

Examines the development of sport in America from its folk game roots to the multi-billion dollar business of today. The course investigates the interrelationship between sport and social, 经济, cultural and political forces in the United States. Note: 学生s wishing to use this course to fulfill the SUNY General Education requirement in American History are required to meet one of the following criteria: successful completion of 他的 203 or 他的 204; score 85 or better on the 纽约 State Regents American History and Government examination; or earn a score of 3 or better on the AP United States history examination.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe the primary characteristics of the major eras of American sport.
2. Discuss how sport influences civic engagement of individuals and groups.
3. Analyze the ways mass communication has impacted the development of sport.
4. Analyze the influence of modern sport on the development of higher education in America using both primary and secondary sources.
5. Discuss the evolution of rules within various major sports.
6. Evaluate the role of various demographics on the development of American sport.
7. Explain the impact of globalization on American sport.
8. Assess the various consequences of the professionalization of sport.
9. Interpret various primary documents related to American sport history.
10. Assess how the culture of sport has impacted different groups in American society.
11. Appraise for bias and viewpoint primary or secondary documents related to sport history.
12. Assess multiple types of historical evidence related to sport history to formulate an informed response.
